Good Morning! Happy 4th of July! . . . Since this is supposed to be my yoga blog I’m going to take a moment to talk about my inner journey so far with ashtanga yoga. As everything in life tends to be, it’s has been an ebb and flow of emotions and growth and steps both forward and back. As many men and women do, I suffer from depression and anxiety. I go to therapy every week and use an EMDR method to help reprocess traumatic memories. Sometimes this can take months of working on the same memory, and other times one memory leads to another and another and soon enough I’m swimming in a deep dark black hole of trauma and self hatred and a sense of being utterly and wholly alone. . I typically do my yoga in the afternoon, as soon as I get home from work. Sometime, my practice helps calm the voices in my head that are spinning and yelling and repeating on a never ending loop. Sometimes, I can’t even find my center and I end up just crying on my mat. . I’m learning that you can’t turn wholly to yoga and expect it to correct and realign your whole life. Yoga is a practice, and that practice is for life. Take the peace and grounding you find on your mat and bring it to work, to family dinners, to therapy, to work parties, to date nights and late nights with your little ones. This, is so much easier said than done. . I have come far enough to recognize when I need to adjust, ground, and realign my attitude in my daily life. But that’s typically where I stop. Like I’m reaching for it, and can almost touch it, but the anger and sadness inside of me are holding me back, just out of reach. . Another main goal I wanted to achieve with this practice is self-love. Boy oh boy. Has that been a flop! Unfortunately I still weigh myself twice a day, and keep that number with me every where I go. It sets the tone for my day. Yesterday @livin.the.sweat.life posted some beautiful words about self image, and I’m trying to bring those words to the front of my mind every morning. Maybe I won’t get on the scale. Maybe I will. But either way, I will try to remind myself that my body is unique and special and beautiful and strong, and that is what truly matters. #namaste

#SistersOfYoga Day 3 - Wheel ; This challenge is reminding me each time I get on my mat, to be PRESENT. These last 3 days, I have had the most relaxing and beautiful practices since I began yoga in 2014. I have a PURPOSE each time I roll out my mat; to warm up my body, focus on my breathing, try an asana, and be thankful and grateful.
