This painting titled “Comrades” by Robert Gibbs captures the hardships and life during the Siege of Sevastopol from 1854-1855 (42nd Highland Regiment “Black Watch”. With the battles of Balaclava and Inkerman over the allied armies hunkered down for the big siege of Sevastopol. The British would have roughly 40,000 men at the outset of the siege and concluding the siege with close to 80,000 (almost all of them reinforcements). However, the men suffered extremely during the Winter. Initially in the Autumn a hurricane flooded the trenches and wiped out 21 ships. The British and French lost crucial supplies for the Winter months. Then in November the snow began to fall. The temperatures plummeted and disease and frostbite became rampant in the British camp. The French experienced similar difficulties, but had a better supply and medical system and did not suffer as poorly as the British. Occasional pot shots, cannonades, and sorties would whittle down the British numbers. Men were dropping like flies on an unprecedented scale: foreshadowing the WW1 conflict. Entire regiments were wiped out, and the 42nd suffered terribly. The British lost 16,000 men due to disease during the siege compared to the 2,755 killed in action during the course of the whole war. The siege of Sevastopol was an entirely knew experience for the British Army and would be etched in its legacy forever. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #snow #cold #winter #death #hero #legend #legacy #soldier #highland #kilt #scotland #army #siege #crimea #ww1 #uk #british #france #europe #military #history #war #warriors
